I've just eaten a sub that's been sitting in front of an air conditioner for 24 hours.
Will I get sick? Only time will tell.
The apartment across the street and about a block down caught on fire! http://pronterra.net/~wade/fire.jpghttp://pronterra.net/~wade/fire2.jpgI spent lots of the night watching to make sure it didn't come after my apartment too. It was freaky...I stepped out on my patio, and I could actually feel the heat from the fire. At one point, there were pieces of still glowing building landing on the parking lot. The fire looks to be almost out now...I'm so wired, it will be a long, tired day at work. I wonder if anyone was hurt.

No space left on hda1! :( I think i need to reinstall. with a /usr partition this time. Silly Mandrake, configuring my home directory to have all the space. Apparently, Gentoo needs more, what with all the compiling and stuff.
Woo!
...actually, I'm kind of disappointed at how quickly the game went. They promised 120 hours of gameplay, and I'm done after 35.
Ah well, still a good game.
( Read more... )So, don't forget to set your clocks ahead today.
My boss told us this story the other day about his 3 year old son. He went home one day and found his kid feeding a chipmunk, which was tame enough to eat out of his hand.
Father: Did you pick a name for him?
Son: His name is Fatty.
Father: He's not so fat.
Son: He will be.
About a week later, my boss comes home to find his son feeding the chipmunk again. This time, he's grown very large. Amusing, the he thinks.
A week later again, he comes home to find his son feeding a skinny chipmunk.
Father: And what's this guy's name?
Son: His name is Fatty.
Father: But this isn't the same chipmunk as before, are they all named Fatty?
Son: No, this is the new Fatty. The old one got killed by the cat.
So, he talks to the nanny, and he finds out that this has been going on for a while, and is quite the vicious cycle. The son will tempt the chipmunks with food until one of them is brave enough to take it from his hand. This chipmunk becomes 'Fatty'. In the ensuing weeks, Fatty becomes fatter and fatter, until he can no longer run from the cat. Then the cat eats him, and the kid goes back to coaxing another chipmunk to take Fatty's place.
Amusing and appalling, all at once.
So, I found out the other day that I didn't have a valid copy Windows XP. I know, a lot of people don't have a valid copy of Windows XP, but this is surprising because I thought I did, because of the license agreement with Microsoft at work. Turns out I can install Microsoft Office at home legally, but not Windows. Crap. So, faced with the prospect of either: 1. Compromising my radical stance of not using pirated software 2. Paying $400 for XP Pro 3. Installing Linux I went with option 3. Linux has come a long way since the last time I installed it. Didn't have to use the command line once while I configured it all, and it auto-detected my printer/scanner, and even my external firewire DVD-Burner. Awesome, I thought. There didn't seem to be any missing apps. MozillaFirebird for web browsing (I never used IE on Windows anyway), kopete for MSN chatting, BitTorrent for downloading, VLC for playing movies/DVDs. Even XChat for IRC, and OpenOffice for a Microsoft Office replacement with built-in PDF exporting. Until I tried to use the TV-Out on my video card. So to any brave soul out there, who's thinking about Linux, use an nVidia Card, not an ATI like me. TV-Out on nVidia is trivial. I found tons of walkthroughs. But for ATI cards, you're sunk. It's because ATI's Linux drivers don't support it. And nVidia's do. I found one project called GATOS, that claims to support TV-Out for ATI. They give these very sparse directions that I barely manage to follow, and then at the end of them, they say "If you ONLY do what the instructions say, it won't work. Make sure you Blah Blah Linux makefile _INSTALL_ K_SACRIFICE_FIRSTBORN_CHILD" or something like that. No instructions on actually how to do that part. Bah. Condescending geeks. I wonder how often I sound like that. :P Considering the only uses of my PC are downloading Fansubs and watching them, that really bites. I eventually found a generic video driver that mirrors output to the TV. Yay. Not great, but I prefer it to $400. My apartment is now Microsoft free...which makes it smell a little better than before.
